As a licensed Professional Engineer (still active), you could say I was "built" that way. I was flattered, excited, but also hesitant to step up to my role as VP of BI, DS, DE at KAR. It was a similar type of job, but easily at 10x scale. Taking ideas and practices from one business with multiple parts, to a multitude of businesses internationally has been a challenge. Add divestitures, retooling, replatforming, and a complete shift in approach, and it has been quite a ride. I am happy I did it. I am still learning and growing, and having an impact. That is what matters. Previously, joining BacklotCars as data team serial number 001 was one of the most exciting, and on occasion scary, projects of my career. Best move ever. As VP of Data Science and Operations, I wore a couple hats. As the VP of DS, I focus on building and growing a team of highly skilled and empowered data “ninjas” to deliver quality insight, direction and services to the business. Our mission is to champion a data-driven culture and drive long-term business value through the development of best-in-class data practices and systems. This team manages all parts of the data lifecycle. From BI to ML, from ETL to API, we aim to provide everything the business and application could need from a data standpoint. Operationally, I manage in some way almost all parts of the business technology stack. This would include systems such as email, CRM, integration, communications and telephony, SMS and various others. In this respect, we provide the keep-the-lights-on functionality to keep the day-to-day business operations running. Prior to BacklotCars, the arc of my career did not follow that of a traditional electrical engineer. I started designing and building industrial control systems for power generation facilities. I really loved it, and eventually had the chance to follow my work to the field and run construction and startup for those projects throughout the US and Canada. As I started to climb from engineering, to project management to program management and so on, I began to realize something. Soon, there would be enough wire, cable and pipe. However, software was taking over the world. I probably should have seen it sooner given how reliant modern industrial controls are on software, networks and databases, but better late than never. I promptly made the switch to digital technology and never looked back.
