He is responsible for an annual budget of more than 2.4 million with over 40 staff members. Bill has led the Nature Center through three capital growth campaigns that have totaled over 16 million and increased the endowment from 4 million to nearly 20 million. The Kalamazoo Nature Center is known as one of the largest and most successful nature centers in the country. Bill serves as President of Nature Ventures, a 501c-3 organization with the goal of taking on "ecopreneurial" projects with potentially higher risk profiles. In the past, Bill was the Regional Director of Stewardship for The Nature Conservancy in the 13 states of the Southeast. He helped lead a team in establishing the 26,000 acre Joseph W. Jones Ecological Research Center in south Georgia. Bill has his Ph.D. from Michigan State University in plant ecology. He currently serves as Secretary/Treasurer for the Southwest Michigan Sustainable Business Forum and on the Board of Discover Kalamazoo. He continues to provide management and programmatic consulting services to nature centers throughout the country. In the past, he has served on the Citizens Committee for Michigan State Parks and on the National Board of the Association of Nature Center Administrators where he served as Treasurer. Bill has served on the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Interpretation Advisory Committee and the Michigan State Parks Strategic Planning Committee on Interpretation. Bill attended the Leadership Development Program at the Center for Creative Leadership, the Disney Management Institute’s program on Service and Customer Loyalty, Leadership Works at Indiana University and numerous fundraising workshops.
