I co-developed and delivered (with Dr. Char Myklebust), A BETTER WAY: A Positive, School-wide, Proactive, Pro-Social, Equitable and Instructional Approach to Student Behavior versus THE OLD WAY, an exclusionary, reactive, punitive approach that continues to increase disproportionality, drop out rates and achievement gaps. Training modules focus on Social-Emotional Learning (SEL), trauma-informed practices, brain based learning, restorative practices, alternatives to suspension, de-escalation strategies, the anxiety curve, positive school cultures and tiered interventions. I believe more kids can meet higher standards in their behavior and their learning, but they can't meet their potential if their behavior gets in the way of learning for themselves or others. Kids need to learn how to manage their own behaviors, (social emotional skills), and understand how their behavior impacts their teachers, their classmates and their own learning. Assuming students know what is expected of them, we need to ensure they have the SEL skills to meet those expectations. Those skills include self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills and responsible decision-making skills (CASEL.org). Adults benefit from managing our emotions as well, which serves to reduce conflicts and battles for control, and increases the joy and sense of accomplishment that teachers and other caring adults in our schools deserve.
