About five years ago, I deliberately set out to find a job in the public sector to challenge myself to learn to work in an environment outside of formal academia. As hoped for, I have learned valuable interpersonal and professional skills. I have also learned how to write for and communicate with non-academic audiences. I learned project management skills, having adopted existing projects when I first started in the public sector, as well as conceptualising and implementing projects within the parameters of government policy and systems. I was also responsible for media liaison and public relations, issuing press releases of departmental activities on a daily basis. I interacted with journalists and other media professionals. I wrote copy for formal documents, including press packs, annual performance plans, speeches and more. I am trained in academic philosophy. This training has given me a highly transferable skill set. I am able to analyse, abstract and particularise concepts and their constituent parts. This applies to theoretical discussions in academic contexts or practical tasks such as a government project or the sale of a product. I am currently writing a thesis towards a PhD in philosophy at the University of Cape Town. I am interested in issues around philosophical anthropology (e.g. "what is a person?"), political philosophy (e.g. "what is justice?"), and African philosophy (e.g. "what is Ubuntu?"). I am using internet resources to learn copywriting, marketing and Python. I will pursue formal qualifications in these skills after completing my PhD.
