From 2007-16 I directed Free Minds in Austin, Texas, building it from a pilot project to an established part of Austin's educational landscape. Since 2016 I have consulted with the Clemente Course in the Humanities, the national organization linking Free Minds and 30 community education programs across the country. I oversee outreach, communications, and am part of a team developing evaluation measures to capture the impact of 20+ years of engaging the humanities in diverse settings. My essays have appeared in the Sun, Oxford American, Gettysburg Review, Hippocampus, River Teeth and in Edible Austin. My op-eds advocating for adult students have appeared in the Washington Post, Dallas Morning News, Texas Tribune, and elsewhere. I am the author of the poetry chapbook Weeks In This Country. For five years I wrote features stories on research and programs for The University of Texas at Austin. I have taught poetry to children and adults, trained activists in writing op-eds, and taught creative nonfiction and poetry at Austin Community College. For two years I served as a volunteer writing mentor in the Veterans Writing Project. In Spring 2019 I co-taught a new graduate class at the Michener Center for Writers, "Literary Citizenship: Teaching Writing for Social Change." My work centers on expanding opportunities for intellectual and creative community for a diverse cross-section of individuals and groups. Specialties: Essays and creative nonfiction. Program development and management. Teaching poetry. Building collaborations across educational and community organizations.
