Previously, I worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Salk Institute, in Dr. Sam Pfaff’s lab. There I studied the neuromuscular junction through stem cell technologies. The deterioration of these specialized synapses is a hallmark of several neurodegenerative diseases and I was particularly interested in the molecular mechanisms behind this selective degradation. My PhD was earned at University of California, San Francisco in Dr. Bo Huang’s lab, where I focused on the development of tools for improved super-resolution microscopy with application to the study of G-protein Coupled Receptors (GPCRs) and their protein-protein interactions. During these efforts, I specialized in STORM/PALM, along with other light-microscopy modalities. I strongly believe in the importance of sharing scientific knowledge across disciplines, and have enjoyed several successful collaborations, particularly with the Puri (Sanford Burnham Medical Center), Kim (University of Nebraska), Von Zastrow (UCSF), Weissman (UCSF) and Irannejad (UCSF) labs, as well as the Leonetti (Chan Zuckerberg Biohub) group. Prior to my graduate work, I was trained in both Biology and Physics, and have since focused on the interface of these two fields, initially with a focus on heart disease/therapy, and more recently neurodegenerative diseases.
