Sometimes what I get from the woods is a reminder of the “forest for the trees.” I reconnect to the big picture, the long view, the larger context, the meaning of it all. Sometimes, it’s the opposite. Sometimes what I need is just to pause in front of one particular tree and soak in its awesomeness. That one tree tells me everything I need to know about the whole forest, and about myself, and about life. Building a good story — for a brand or a campaign or a book — takes both. It requires understanding the forest for the trees (strategy) and capturing the tree for the forest (specific). That’s what I do and love to do. I love to think strategically, the basis of which is always noticing and asking questions — the right questions. I also love to craft a story, honing it until it I get it right, whether that’s the right name for a company or the right copy for a pitch or the right narrative for an essay, an article, or a book. We all know an awesome story; it makes us pause and want to soak it in. It tells us everything we need to know…about the brand, yes, but also about ourselves and about life. For a long time I had trouble answering the question "What do you do?" because my work took (and takes) many forms. But on a walk in the woods one afternoon, not surprisingly, it struck me: I help people tell their story. The client might be a company needing to discern its mission and vision and build out its brand. It might be an organization or a family wanting to secure its legacy. The project might be as simple as a word or as robust as a book. After 25-years at this, I trust the work to reveal itself, so long it balances strategy and specifics, forest and tree. Highlights of my career include building the inaugural online brand for Harper’s Bazaar, serving as a member of the founding administrative team at Ensworth High School in Nashville, authoring the Land Trust for Tennessee’s award-winning book, "Home to Us: Six Stories of Saving the Land,” and launching Mangata, a sort of soul-gathering for women. I have written three more books on private commission and have worked with over 100 companies across industries and project types. I love a good project, and even more a good story.
