Following an internship at Conran Design, he obtained his BA in Industrial Design Engineering at London’s Central St. Martins. In 1984 he attended Milan’s Domus Academy for a Master Degree in Design Management, followed by an economics degree from the Bocconi University. He then joined King Miranda as junior designer, before moving to San Francisco in1988 to work as senior designer at frogdesign, clients included Logitech, Sun Microsystems, Steve Jobs at NeXT. Three years later, Philips Electronics recruited him as Design Manager for audio products where he initiated collaborations with R. Lovegrove and M. Wanders. Subsequently he became communication products division Design Manager responsible for design of the GSM phones. In 1994 Michele De Lucchi invited him to join him as Partner to assume the responsibility for the Olivetti Design Group. Later under his leadership the studio won Deutsche Bahn’s competition to design the nationwide ticketing offices and three railway stations. In 1998 Michele De Lucchi and Torsten Fritze established Studio & Partners as new vehicle for their collaboration. Since 2010, as its sole partner, he focused activities to Interior projects as the stilwerk, Turkish Embassy, Deutsche Bank HQ in Berlin and retail interiors for Barclays, Sberbank, Deutsche Bank and products for iGuzzini, Zumtobel and Haworth. As part of his advisor role to clients he acted as Design/Brand Manager for Haworth’s European activities until 2012. In the spring of 2018 Torsten set up his new practice - dv8 id - dedicated to meet the design challenges of the digital age and to explore new avenues in Interior and Industrial Design. Torsten’s keen interest in contemporary art and the issue of perception led to collaborations with A. Kapoor and T. Cragg and he was professor at the HfbK Hamburg. He is a frequent design prize juror at the IF awards and recently at the IDSA awards.
