Tony Cant Email & Phone Number | Dr Tony Cant has 22 years of experience in DSTO in the field of technical and policy aspects of trusted systems. During this time, he has both carried out and managed research and development into the application of formal methods (i.e. formal modelling, specification and verification techniques) to critical systems, with applications to both safety-critical and security-critical systems. Most recently, he led R&D into tool support for structured documentation, called the Hierarchical Verification Environment (HiVE). Tony has also provided policy, standards and technical advice to the Defence Materiel Organisation (DMO) over many years, including advice on safety management to Defence projects as well as support to the Australian Ordnance Council (and later Ordnance Safety Review Board) on assessments of the safety and suitability for service of weapons systems and ordnance. Tony is experienced in the assessment of MIL STD 882 safety programs, and has represented the DMO in assessments by the US Navy's Weapons Systems Explosive Safety Review Board (WSESRB) Tony chaired a Focus Area in Safety-Critical Systems under The Technical Cooperation Program(TTCP). This program involves international Defence collaborative R&D. Tony initiated this focus area and guided its work over ten years. Tony (in collaboration with Dr Brendan Mahony) is the author of the Australian Defence Standard DEF(AUST)5679, now at Issue 2, entitled “Safety Engineering for Defence Systems”. This standard represents a structured, systematic and coherent approach to safety engineering processes and to the development of a safety case. Prior to joining DSTO, Tony had over ten years of experience in research into problems in mathematical physics. He was then involved with science policy formulation for four years, in particular in the administration of the Generic Technology Grants Scheme for Information Technology. Tony has written or co-authored 44 research papers and 10 other publications.
