She began in the early 80's with ASIAN Inc. just as the San Francisco Human Rights Commission prioritized women and minority-owned businesses in securing contracts with various public agencies. She then co-founded KarMa Pictures and Celestial Pictures, two independent multi-media production companies whose mission was to create stereotype-shattering films featuring young people of color. Tonia’s focus on education began when she served as an Undergraduate Dean in the College of Environmental Design at the University of California, and the Facilities Planner and Facilities Manager at Stanford University’s School of Medicine, prior to beginning work on the boards at various independent schools around the SF Bay area. She co-chaired the Board at The College Preparatory School in Oakland, where she also chaired the Board's Governance and Diversity committees and co-chaired the Head Search committee. She served on the Board of the Partners Program, an academic bridge program for Oakland Unified middle schoolers who qualify for free or reduced lunch. She was a founding board member of the Roses in Concrete Community School, a K-8 public charter school serving some of the most vulnerable children in East Oakland. Her vision is to build a robust pipeline of bilingual caregivers for underserved monolingual elders and their families (Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean, Vietnamese, etc).
