I brought multiple mindsets to this challenge––my creative training as a graphic designer, on-the-ground experience from twenty-five years of practice as a youth developer and community organizer, an ability to apply a “big picture” perspective––gained from urban & environmental policy studies and departmental management experience, and an innate craving to know “Why?” I approached my work sensitive to being an outsider, but excited about being a catalyst and connector. I thrived on starting projects with just the raw elements, whether that be a needs assessment for a capacity building program in a mobile home city, baking bread, or building a cross-country touring bicycle. I shaped the youth development programming that led America’s Promise Alliance to award the city of Landfall, Minnesota (pop. 700) a three-time designation as one of the 100 Best Communities for Young People, sharing accolades with Boston and New York City. As a program designer and grant writer I secured over 1 million dollars for youth programming. Twenty-four years ago I conceived, and led a youth bicycle program which, through rides and repairs, builds skills, increased fitness, rewards goal attainment and encourages human-powered exploration. Collectively over recent summers, 40 8-to-15 year-olds pedaled 7838 miles and earned 18 bikes. In 2018 I developed Ready To Be, a program framework guiding mobile home youth to confidently plan for postsecondary life, employing cutting-edge resources such as Open Badges and digital portfolios.
