However technology doesn’t implement itself and organisations are pretty good at putting up barriers to change. Silos of technical teams, mistrust of suppliers, poor engagement with customers, unrealistic expectations, lack of focus and geographical dispersion all add up to create inertia. This leads to unrealistic expectations, deliveries getting stuck and teams working in opposition. This is where I come in. I have spent over 25 years working in different organisations helping them to deliver IT change, whether it is driving operational change in changing market conditions, upgrading capability and capacity to support growth, mobilising new technology for competitive advantage or meeting the challenges of regulation and governance. All to keep IT output aligned with business needs. It has been an interesting journey. Trends have come and gone. New tools have become the thing that everyone wants, only to be replaced a few years later. Delivery models have changed from contract driven to collaboration; from monolithic to incremental. There is outsourcing, offshoring, right-shoring, distributed, centralised that have all have become popular with varying degrees of success. Now we are wrestling with digitalisation, cloud, X-aaS and AI. The world does not stand still. The thing I have learned is that at the heart of all these changes is the desire to bring people closer together, to increase accountability to customers, to provide more effective solutions, and to deliver change more quickly. This is irrespective of organisation, tools and frameworks. In fact, it’s people that deliver and operate technology and it’s the people that need help to get things done in a way that generates great outcomes for customers. It is armed with this simple understanding that I am able to get great results.
