My responsibilities included drafting advice and legal submissions (for both court and arbitration hearings) on a wide variety of corporate, commercial, tax, media, insurance, maritime and privacy matters. My responsibilities also included drafting and negotiating complex commercial contracts.The Crown Law Office is one of the leading litigation practises in New Zealand. It provides legal advice and representation to the New Zealand government on matters affecting the executive in the areas of public, administrative, tax and criminal law. As an Assistant Crown Counsel, my litigation experience includes numerous appearances as both lead and junior counsel on behalf of the Crown in tribunals and courts in New Zealand, including the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court. I appeared on a wide variety of both interlocutory and substantive matters. This was often in the context of complex, novel and high profile cases. In almost all complex cases, I was the sole junior counsel working alongside senior counsel. For more simple matters, I was lead counsel with oversight from senior counsel where appropriate. In all matters I was involved from the initial receipt of instructions until final disposition of the matter (including any appeals). In addition to appearing in court, my litigation responsibilities included managing a team of litigation support staff, briefing clients and witnesses, drafting litigation strategies, drafting affidavits and briefs of evidence, drafting substantive submissions, discovery, settlement negotiations, resolving costs disputes and alternative dispute resolution. My responsibilities also included conducting investigations into charitable trusts, usually in the context of allegations of fraud or misappropriation of trust funds.Simpson Grierson is one of New Zealand's leading and largest commercial law firms. I was the recipient of one of ten nationwide Simpson Grierson scholarships, which included spending three months as a summer clerk with the firm. As a summer clerk, I spent six weeks in the Local Government and Environment team and six weeks in the Employment team.
