Pioneering Bahamian Guides, Their Knowledge, Their Stories, and Opportunities for Resource Management, a research project, book, film documentary and PhD Dissertation. In the 30's, 40's and 50's, pioneering guides from the Bahamas, worked tirelessly to establish a world class fishery and tourism business. Their efforts in the Bahamas revolutionized shallow water angling, helping to shape a global Bonefishing phenomena. Largely undocumented, the knowledge these men hold is forever being lost as these "legends" inevitably, yet regretfully pass. Their lessons and stories when properly recorded, provide a valuable glimpse into the history of Bonefishing, shallow water angling, fly fishing evolution, and the establishment of the Bahamas Bonefishing Industry. Acquired over thousands of hours on the flats, lessons these men have learned can also be applied to resource management for a more holistic, more effective, understanding of local ecosystems. Their input in local decision making, can create a more sustainable resource base, benefiting tourists and locals alike, for generations to come. Over the next two years, I will be working with Bahamians, local NGO's and the College of the Bahamas, to interview and document, traditional ecological knowledge held by early Bahamian recreational angling guides across the islands. I'll record their stories, and work with locals to apply gained knowledge to sound resource management. Expected outcomes from this work include, a feature documentary, a series of short films, a biographical sketch in a compilation (book), valuable data sets, resource management documents and my PhD Dissertation.
