I believe that the key to a successful AppSec programme lies in empowering development teams and creating a conscientious security culture. But for this to work, we AppSec engineers need to provide the knowledge, skills and effective tooling to enable developers to write secure software. I’m currently tackling the issue of ineffective and inaccurate tooling by evangelising runtime security as the next generation of application security testing. As a Solutions Engineer at Contrast Security, I help our customers discover how instrumentation, IAST and RASP integrate as part of the SDLC to offer a more effective alternative to traditional security testing. I pull on my experience in application security to help guide and advise on strategy and best practices for runtime security. And through product demonstrations, education and Proof-of-Value trials, I build the case for runtime security and the value of our products. I cut my teeth building practical lab environments and writing cyber security content for an EdTech start-up. My initial focus was on offensive security, building deliberately vulnerable environments to teach the tools and skills of penetration testing and red-teaming. However, as my interest in application security grew, I took on a greenfield project to build out a new application security offering aimed at teaching secure coding and DevSecOps concepts to developers. As the technical lead for the product, I was responsible for developing an initial proof-of-concept idea into a pilot project, and I’m proud of my instrumental role in building the team and expanding the product offering through to its successful launch. I like to be innovative, so I like working in a start-up/scale-up environment where I can be involved in the development of new products or simply use my Python skills to solve problems or bridge gaps with internal tooling.
