In 2003, she founded Poetic People Power, a poetry and activism group that creatively explores social and political topics, offering insight and solutions to issues that affect our everyday lives. As producing artistic director, she's created and curated 20 spoken word shows, worked with 40 poets and commissioned 130 new poems on topics including inequality, universal health care, global warming, the water crisis and human rights abuses. She has performed her poetry on stages throughout New York City, and she’s been featured in O, The Oprah Magazine, Time Out New York and HuffPost for her visionary leadership of Poetic People Power. She’s received 20 competitive grant awards from Puffin Foundation, Left Tilt Fund, PEN America and Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. As a journalist and editor, her media career focuses on spotlighting the issues of our time. She was the editor in chief of the independently-owned environmental news site EcoWatch; she worked as a segment producer for Tina Brown’s Women in the World in association with the New York Times; and she’s been a consultant for the Sidney Hillman Foundation, which honors social justice journalists. In 2015, she received Images and Voices of Hope’s Appreciation Award for her multimedia website invisiblelabor.com, a site that highlighted essential, under-recognized workers long before the pandemic. Most recently, her articles for nonprofit publications have focused on social entrepreneurs and health. Her writing has appeared in local and national publications including Condé Nast Traveler, MSN, Cosmopolitan, American Theatre, HuffPost, EcoWatch, Youth.gov, Invisible Project, BUST and Clamor. Tara’s commitment to building a better world is also reflected in her nonprofit work. In 2009, she cofounded The Project Solution with Joe Gonzalez. This international nonprofit funds low-cost infrastructure projects - including water and sanitation - in developing countries. The nonprofit has crowdfunded donations to support 50 projects in 14 countries, serving 30,000 people. She has worked on staff for Woodhull Institute for Ethical Leadership, Women’s Project & Productions, Theatre Communications Group and Erica Jong Productions. She’s been a consultant for 20 companies including Our Time Theatre Company, Girls Write Now, Laughter League and Breaking Walls.
