I used to be a high school teacher in Ukraine. So, when I moved to the United States, I also decided to change my career. “No more teenage drama and ambiguity of literature! I will be an accountant! Hard numbers, clear answers! This way or no way!” Or so I thought. On my professional journey, I learned to face and defuse the team’s drama over deadlines and problem-solving. I learned to see the story behind the numbers instead of reading them in my favorite books. I worked full-time while getting my accounting degree. As a new immigrant with a family, I couldn’t afford to choose between work and school. My first accounting job was at a small moving company in the Carolinas. Predictably, it became my learning lab while I was getting my first degree. I applied management accounting and finance principles to get the company on track. After a few previous years of operating at a loss, my second year on the job was the first profitable year for the company, even though the revenue declined, responding to the deep economic recession at the time. I was very proud to be a part of that success! Since then, I have worked in different places. It makes me proud and driven to see the company I work for become healthier financially. I have a Master’s of Accountancy degree and am a Certified Management Accountant. I am still learning. The ever-changing business world presents new challenges for Accountants. The explosion of high-tech companies created a need for exceptional SaaS accounting. ASC 985-20, ASC 350-40, ASC 606… Keep up, accountants! It’s fun to learn new things! It’s fun to keep up! I love to be in the thick of changes and making things happen. I love teamwork, learning from people, and helping them learn and grow professionally. I love to apply theory in practice. Good analysis leads to good business decisions. I love seeing the story behind the numbers and helping people in that story.
