Suzy Strudwick Email & Phone Number | Forest Project has a philosophy that regular contact with nature is absolutely essential for good mental health and physical well being. This is born from our own direct experiences with the natural world, from our own sense that this is something everyone should be doing to increase their chances of happiness and wellbeing. We have observed children and young people becoming increasingly disconnected from nature and this project seeks to restore the balance a little in Croydon by reconnecting children and young people with green spaces. Our activities really get back to the basics of life, and children and young people start to learn they don’t need to be entertained, they can experiment safely here and take supported risks without the stress of a final major goal to achieve. Young people work on all manner of soft skills such as confidence building, motivation, raising self esteem, improving social skills, perseverance, the ability to self challenge, to work in a team, to work alone, to just be. They are learning these things through the learning and application of physical skills which can be applied back in the wider world such as safe sawing and wood splitting, knots, basic principles of construction, which plants are edible, which can be used to heal, the ecosystem of a woodland. They learn that knives are a tool, not a weapon, and that fire is not something to be started in a back alley using aerosols and cardboard. It is to be respected, cultivated with care, providing a source of warmth, comfort and a way of cooking creative recipes. The fire circle is a magical place where storytelling, singing and the art of conversation is learnt. People start to learn about their own impact on their environment, how sustainability works, and learn to start taking responsibility for the world around them. So we spiral from a very personal experience, to one where children and young people are considering their own relationship with others and with their world.
