Suzy Buckley Email & Phone Number | Research: Dr Buckley directs a research initiative towards fetal and neonatal gene therapy for early onset lung disorders within the Institute for Women’s Health at UCL. With 20 years’ experience in preclinical models of human disease, her research has had a wide impact on the field of perinatal gene delivery including such topics as cell-type specific gene delivery to the fetal and neonatal murine lung, the permanent cure of haemophlia B in mice using lentiviral vectors and elucidating one of the fundamental mechanisms by which adenovirus vectors transduce cells. She recently acted as principal scientist on a five-year Somatotransgenic Bioimaging project (funded by the European Research Council) which developed a process of precisely measuring biochemical pathways in live animals by studying light emission. Her research skills include complex surgical techniques and diverse molecular biology methods. Teaching: Dr Buckley plays a prominent role in teaching; she is sole director of a new MSc Women’s Health programme (starting 2018) and co-lead of two modules on the Prenatal Genetics & Fetal Medicine MSc at IfWH. She also lectures on several courses in other departments. In addition, she is departmental graduate research advisor to the research students which includes organisation of annual student research days, administration of mentoring schemes both for graduate students and early-career researchers, holding weekly drop-in session for students and liaising with administrative staff and potential new students about PhD opportunities. Equality: Dr Buckley is co-lead of the IfWH Equality, Diversity and Inclusion team and was instrumental in the Institute’s successful Gold Athena SWAN award application in April 2017, the only gold awarded in that round and one of only 10 such awards in the UK. She shares good equality practise across UCL and internationally, for example, with the European Society for Gene and Cell Therapy.
