  Susan Batchelar is a My professional experience as an early childhood teacher led to my research focus, which has been on teachers and teaching practice in the context of New Zealand early childhood education. In particular, I have investigated the notion of intentional teaching, the ways in which early childhood teachers interpret this concept, and the ways in which they might demonstrate it in practice. In my Master’s research (2011) I explored the ways in which early childhood teachers supported young children to grow up healthy in spirit, and questioned whether they were intentional in providing such support. This was a small-scale study, conducted in one early childhood centre with a Christian philosophy. It found that the majority of participating teachers were uninformed about children’s spirituality, and were therefore not intentional about supporting this aspect of children’s development through their practice. In my doctoral research (2016) I expanded my investigation of intentional teaching, and studied teacher's practice across the whole early childhood curriculum. The study found that intentional teaching was an holistic and dynamic process that was demonstrated both in pre-planned events and experiences, and in teachers' spontaneous and intuitive responses to children's enquiry, but that it was typically unrecognised and unarticulated. It also found that intentional teaching was evident in a wide range of events and experiences. These findings supported the literature that suggested that early childhood teachers were typically unaware of the notion of intentional teaching, extended the literature that had confined studies of intentional teaching to curriculum areas such as mathematics and science, and challenged the literature that associated intentional teaching with planned actions only. Both of these studies have significant implications for teachers, teacher-educators, and providers of in-service support and education.
