Sunil George Email & Phone Number | A casual visit to someone I knew in the late 90s put me in touch with the harsh reality of stigma and discrimination and what ill health could do to individuals and communities. It led me to reflect on the question why for many years? Can a virus or a condition change things so much that friends turn foes, family refuses to see logic and communities erect walls that were non-existent till a clinical diagnosis changed it all! The answers that I got from those I knew did not seem to be convincing and with some reluctance I sought to find answers for myself. And that started my journey as a public health professional in the early 2000s. And what a journey it has been! From starting out as a young person seeking simplistic answers and working with marginalised communities in south India, I have worn many hats and at times none at all in this quest for understanding- activist, programme manager and finally an academic; multiple roles that I have taken on to study and understand the realities of what it means to lead a health and productive life as a member of a marginalised community. This exciting journey has taken me from the streets of urban Bengaluru in south India to the slums of Kibera in Kenya; from working with sex workers in India as they sought the dignity that is rightfully theirs to living with Indigenous communities who were experiencing social exclusion and living with them in a tropical forest in Kerala. I love understanding the perspective of multiple stakeholders with whom I work as an academic and seek to understand the multiple realities that people often live in. To this end, I employ my skills as a researcher particularly employing qualitative research methods to collect, analyse and present the reality of health and wellbeing (or the lack of it) that many of these communities face. In particular, I seek to understand structural determinants of ill health- power, intersectionality and a lot more that is easy to push under the carpet but critical to how realities shape up for excluded communities and they way they experience marginalisation. As an academic, I am privileged to be a part of the process of creating new knowledge. This has required a constant sense of openness to new ideas while at the same time holding on the values and principles that have made me what I am. My work has also given me the experience of working in multi-disciplinary teams and often listening to and accepting perspectives that are different from mine. Has it been challenging? Yes. Is it worthwhile? Certainly.
