Sue Snyman Email & Phone Number | Sue Snyman received her PhD (Resource Economics) from the University of Cape Town (UCT) in 2013. Having completed PhD coursework at the University of Goteborg in Sweden in 2008, the focus of her PhD research was on the socio-economic impact of high-end ecotourism in remote, rural communities adjacent to protected areas and was based on over 1800 community surveys in six southern African countries. Sue has worked in the luxury ecotourism industry in southern Africa since 1998, including guiding, community development and liaison, camp management and environmental impact assessments as an independent consultant and during this period completed a Master of Business Science (economics), also at UCT. Research for this degree compared conservation and agriculture in order to evaluate social optimality of land use in the Eastern Cape province, South Africa. From 2008-2018 Sue worked for ecotourism operator, Wilderness Safaris, in various roles, including most recently as Group Sustainability Manager, overseeing regional community development, culture, biodiversity conservation & environmental management systems in seven African countries. Sue then moved to IUCN as Senior Programme Officer, Conservation Areas and Species Programme, coordinating the BIOPAMA programme for Eastern and Southern Africa. She is currently the Research Director for the School of Wildlife Conservation at the African Leadership University. Sue was also vice-chair of the IUCN WCPA Tourism and Protected Areas Specialist (TAPAS) Group and coordinator of the Communities & Heritage Working Group within TAPAS for eight years. She was also a Board Member for Children in the Wilderness South Africa (an environmental education programme in 6 African countries) for 7 years and is a Research Fellow at the School of Tourism and Hospitality at the University of Johannesburg. Academically, Sue is Africa Editor for Tourism Planning and Development Journal & Associate Editor of Frontiers in Sustainable Tourism and a reviewer for numerous international journals, as well as having published in numerous international journals and books. She recently, together with colleague Dr Anna Spenceley, published a book titled "Private sector tourism in conservation areas in Africa"
