With a recent focus on the development of my leadership and management skills, the completion of leadership, business management, change management and project management courses has confirmed that I have the skills, attitude and commitment to be able to fulfil a senior role within emergency services. Evidence of these skills can be demonstrated in my selection to attend the AFAC Developing Future Leaders Course at the Australian Institute of Police Management and in 2024, commencing the Leadership WA-Signature Leadership Program. The resultant critical appraisal of my leadership traits the following attributes: • A very analytical person who judges things on merit rather than personal beliefs. • Systematic and structured with an aim to reach a conclusion on all tasks in an efficient and effective matter. • Results orientated and with strengths in setting up plans and standard systems. • Taking a common sense approach to leadership, producing stable working conditions and working hard to fulfil the obligations of that leadership role. Completion of the graduate programs has also provided me the opportunity to reflect on my strengths and weaknesses as an individual. My personality profiling portrays me as dependable, realistic, sensible and loyal to a tee. As a Planner/Inspector my life is a process of drawing up plans and being prepared. An evaluation by my peers identified that one of best attributes was staying calm and in control, building relationships, and listening to the needs of others. If I look for examples of this they include my dealings with other emergency service organisations, always empathising with the needs of the volunteer and my command and control of major emergencies. As with reflection there are areas for improvement and these will continue to be a focus of mine as I develop as a person and leader.
