As an undergraduate student, I worked as a bookkeeper to gain practical experience of using accounting software and applying basic accounting and financial reporting concepts I learned in university. After graduating, I did my articling for CPA at PwC Canada in Calgary, growing my expertise in the practical application of IFRS and ASPE within the financial services and the mining industries, as well as the nonprofit sector. Once I finished my third year at PwC Canada, I decided to transition into a financial reporting role to get hands-on experience with preparing financial statements from scratch. I was fortunate to get the offer for a senior financial reporting analyst position at SGGG, where I oversaw the financial statement preparation process and reviewed financial statements for many hedge funds, mutual funds, and private equity funds. During my time there, I was promoted to a Team Lead and was put in charge of leading technical training sessions on IFRS and regulatory requirements for investment funds, as well as assisting clients with the first time set-up of financial statements for their new funds. After spending two years at SGGG, I wanted to pursue a role where I'd spend most of my time in accounting research and solving complex accounting problems, and I was able to transition into a technical accounting consulting role with RSM Canada. As a Manager of the Technical Accounting Consulting group, I worked on numerous GAAP conversion projects where I assisted clients with converting from local Canadian and European GAAP to IFRS or US GAAP. As part of these projects, I was also able to grow my expertise in specific areas of accounting, such as accounting for revenue recognition, leases, compound financial instruments, consolidation, and business combination. Later, I became interested in an opportunity to work at a CPA education platform as a technical accounting content producer, and was able to attain the position. Since then, I've done research and prepared CPA-eligible content on a wide range of technical accounting and sustainability reporting topics.
