Steve Garvey Email & Phone Number | My goal for my career is to work behind the scenes in sports. Some jobs that I am interested in are collegiate esports director, sports statistician, coach, and data analyst. Some of the things that I have done to work toward this goal are becoming an Eagle Scout, developing my leadership skills (through leading clubs, teams of my peers, and teams of adults), becoming a resident assistant in college, becoming the captain of Aquinas Rocket League, and by getting different types of work experience. I have worked as a soccer ref, a fast-food employee, at a golf course, at a warehouse, and as an analytics assistant for a national esports league. The analytics job required a high level of problem-solving as I worked with spreadsheets, formulas, formatting, and organization. It has also helped me learn how to work with a leadership hierarchy. Most recently, I was the coach of Lowell High School Rocket League. This position allowed me to display my leadership skills. In March 2023, I coached Lowell High School in the 2023 Griffin-Laker Invitational, an in-person Rocket League tournament featuring six schools in the area. The tournament is double elimination, with best of 5 series’. We were the 2-seed and we made it to the Grand Finals against the 1-seed, West Catholic. We have two lives left and they only have one. West Catholic take us down 3-1. I now get 2 minutes to talk to my team before the winner-takes-all series. High schoolers’ mentality is a little more fragile, so during this time I have to lift their spirits, go over what went wrong, and outline what we can do better. This has to be explained in a way that is clear and can be remembered throughout the next series. A huge part of Rocket League is confidence and consistency which is something I can affect with my coaching. The series goes back and forth and we make it to game 5, winner takes all. Game 5 goes to overtime and the boys look shaky. I’m watching them hold their defensive consistency that I taught them and they pulled out one last goal to win the tournament. We get a trophy, pictures, and a hockey stick signed by the Griffins hockey team. My leadership and coaching played a big role in Lowell winning the tournament.
