Learning happens best when it is engaging, fun, and relevant, and my most memorable experiences as an educator have come by helping people experience the joy of finding things out for themselves. I came to science education quite by accident when I began volunteering as an interpreter at the Museum of Science, Boston. I quickly came to realize that it was something that I both enjoyed immensely and had a real talent for, so I made the relatively easy decision to change career direction completely and become an informal educator. This led to the five happiest and most satisfying years of my working life in the Exhibit Hall Interpretation department at the Museum of Science. There, I had the pleasure of working with the widest possible variety of visitors, from toddlers to adults, with family groups and school groups, and in many different settings, including hands-on drop-in programs, summer courses and temporary exhibits. My role as an educator comprised both activity development and on-the-floor activity interpretation. Creating interesting experiences for such a diverse audience in such a great variety of contexts required a combination of imagination, scientific and technical knowledge, design and fabrication skills, and attention to excellence. I was recently laid off when the Museum of Science decided to eliminate the department and programs that I was part of. I feel incredibly lucky to have had such an enjoyable and rewarding job for the last five years and proud of what I achieved in that time, but now I am looking for a new role. It is vitally important that we should find ways of engaging ALL audiences with science, even in these difficult times!
