Stefano Lazzari Email & Phone Number | Retired from WHO in 2012, Dr Stefano Lazzari is now an independent International Public Health Consultant. Dr Lazzari began working for the World Health Organization in 1988, as medical officer for Emergency Preparedness and Response in the Regional Office for Africa, based in Brazzaville, Congo. He then joined in 1990 the Global Programme on AIDS (GPA) as team leader and technical adviser to the Ministries of Health in, successively, Lesotho, Bangladesh and Indonesia. In 1998, Dr Lazzari moved to WHO Headquarters in Geneva, where he was assigned the responsibility for WHO's activities in HIV/AIDS surveillance. Until 2000 he also chaired the UNAIDS/WHO Working Group on Global HIV/AIDS/STI Surveillance. In 2001, he was appointed Coordinator of the Risk Containment, Mapping and Drug Resistance (RMD) Team. In June 2004 he became the Director of the WHO Lyon Office for National Epidemic Preparedness and Response. He joined the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria in November 2006 as Senior Health Adviser with responsibility for providing expert technical advice on strategic initiatives and public health issues to guide the work of the Global Fund and for building strong collaborative relationships with countries and technical partners. Between December 2010 and August 2012, Stefano Lazzari was the WHO representative in Tunisia. Guest speaker in many international conferences and meetings, Dr Lazzari is also the author of many publications on HIV/AIDS, disease surveillance, influenza pandemics and antimicrobial resistance. Dr Lazzari obtained a medical degree and a specialization in public health and preventive medicine at Parma University in Italy. He is married, with two children. Besides speaking Italian, he speaks fluent English, French and Spanish.
