I have a strong track record of developing an institutional strategy collegially, in lockstep with the university leadership, which I developed while serving as Director of Finance at MIT and CFO at Carnegie Mellon. At MIT the end of the cold war triggered a concern about its disproportionate reliance on applied sciences and relative weakness in the health sciences; and Carnegie Mellon, a very strong institution firmly anchored in Pittsburgh, was considering establishing its first overseas campus in Qatar. In both cases I worked closely with the leadership to develop a strategic plan supported by a data model, and socialize it with the institutions’ constituents and assuage their concerns. I have further refined this approach while serving with a range of academically strong institutions facing financial challenges in turbulent economic times. At the Stevens Institute of Technology I was able to restructure the full debt portfolio and implement targeted organizational improvements to enable the Institute to grow by leveraging its strong market position in science and research along with its enviable geographic location across from Manhattan. At Simmons University in Boston, a student-focused institution shaped by strong values of inclusion and belonging, the recession of 2008-2009 presented unexpected challenges. Here too a restructuring of the debt and a significant reduction in administrative costs combined with a rapid diversification of the revenue streams provided critical relief and enabled the institution to overcome the challenge and flourish.
