Shavontae Yoakum Email & Phone Number | In my undergraduate studies, I have embarked on a creative journey of processing textile application techniques, focused studio work, individualized research and developing personal artistic goals. By analyzing rigorous course standards, I gained versatile skills through executing design procedures. Through experimentation, I learned the properties of fibers, fabrics, forms and the application of color theory. I have mastered exploration of dimensional forms through fabric manipulation using traditional methods such as applique and embroidery to examine stitch in the context of contemporary, yet historic forms of art and creative design. I studied three-dimensional design concepts through sculptural construction and by utilizing contemporary surface design techniques to explore origami patterning, thermal dye printing and heat shaped shibori. This research and development has provided me with artistic freedom to integrate the use of non-traditional materials such as synthetic and natural hair, which the content of my work is largely centered on. The natural and synthetic hair is used to construct works of art that contain both sculptural properties and elements of adornment that accentuate the human form. Through my work, the ornamental aspects of hair are explored through the use of traditional styling techniques such as braiding, Bantu knotting and coiling. The level of detail present in the techniques I use display my interest to employ hair as a means of embellishment that can also be placed in the context of garments and jewelry, which in my eyes, are facets of luxury. Much of my textile work consists of hand-executed garments, neck pieces and three-dimensional objects that engage the body and are constructed through tedious time consuming procedures, such as spinning hair fibers into yarn and weaving braided hair.
