Appointed by Governor Newsom in 2021, Sharon currently serves on the California State Board of Education, the eleven-member body charged with education policy-making for the state's public schools. For more than twenty years, Sharon was a driving force at Gateway Public Schools in San Francisco, where she was a teacher, principal, school founder and, ultimately, executive director for twelve years. Under Sharon’s leadership, Gateway became a nationally-celebrated model of excellence and equity, doubled in size, and launched Gateway Impact, an initiative that shares educational best practices and brings teachers together to collaborate through conferences, speaker series, and digital publications. Sharon has spoken at education conferences across the country about topics ranging from social emotional learning to teacher compensation and professional development to community engagement. She is on the board of Challenge Success, a national nonprofit that works with schools to transform the student experience by focusing on well-being, engagement and belonging. She is passionate about helping to create a more inclusive, kind and just future that benefits from the wisdom and contributions of all. She earned her B.A. with honors from Harvard University in History and Literature, where she was captain of the varsity soccer team, and she received her M.A. in Education at Stanford University. She lives in San Francisco with her wife, Nancy, and her dog, Cody Ross.
