I have worked in Skilled Nursing Facilities since the beginning of my professional career until September of 2013. In 2001 I was introduced to the Cognitive Disabilities Model and Claudia Allen. Claudia and this Model have changed my entire professional career. From 2001 to 2006, I was the manager of an 18-bed Alzheimer's/Dementia Unit and was empowered to lead the way in the implementation of this model into daily care. I also was responsible for restructuring and managing the activities department, and completed staff training on the Cognitive Disabilities Model for all staff on a regular basis. In 2006, I continued as the Activities manager and trainer for the facility but shifted from Unit Manager to Admissions/Case Manager and Discharge Planner as my main role. This was fast-paced and required working closely with my internal team (nursing, therapy, and administration), the individuals, their families, hospitals discharge planners, insurance companies, and home health services and supply companies. It required the ability to stay organized, prioritize, and communicate effectively with all involved. As a Senior Consultant and trainer with CPI and Dementia Care Specialists. I have the privilege to share my experiences to help others utilize this model and focus on the resident's abilities. I believe in the DCS mission "To create a Dementia Capable Society built on the knowledge that persons with dementia can feel joy, fulfillment, and love". We partner with senior communities that share this mission. As a result, clients and their families experience a higher quality of life, caregivers find more job satisfaction, and providers improve their business results. I work with clients virtually in my home office and travel to client sites. I work with the leaders of the organizations as well as front-line staff in a variety of ways specific to the client's needs. Another aspect of my job is to work with owners, architects, designers, etc. to develop Dementia Friendly Environments. I enjoy work which is mission driven and I can make a difference with team members and those we serve.
