Shareen Purcell Email & Phone Number | As a teacher, I created a year long grammar program focused on the middle school level to fill the void of no usable materials in available curriculum. Over eighteen years I have added to it and refined it, creating a solid, workable program. Besides my focus on writing, I think it is a main reason why my students have made the highest jumps in independent testing scores every year. I have shared it with other people who are using it at the school as well as in other countries and in high schools. It is fun, easily modified, progressively laddered, and covers all of the basic skills as well as more detailed, focused look at some of more of the difficult to understand things in grammar and writing. I would like to find a curriculum development situation where I can share this so it can become a key, useful component for everyone in teaching writing. When I create curriculum, I always try to think of using a variety of learning styles and assessments so that it gives every student a chance to explore their strengths and weaknesses and accurately assess them so they can become independent learners. One never truly learns anything by doing it in one way. When one can recognize it, read it, write it, speak it, draw it, compare it, and create from it, then one has truly learned. There needs to be an understanding of the differentiation between simple recognition and copying and true understanding so those skills can be applied. The specifics of curriculum are less important than the skills of being a learner. Additionally, with 30 years of experience teaching school and reading and writing, I find I have refined my skills of being able to take complex information and focus and simplify it to new levels. In working on local community development issues, I am working on taking large amounts of key evidence and information and focusing and explaining it for the general public so they can understand the issues. Besides my teaching experience, I have a wide variety of skills including riding and training my horses and competing dressage at the highest level, extensive knowledge of cat and dog behavior, and even some experience working with marine mammals. I am a painter, builder crafter, creator. I love being original innovative and always expanding my boundaries. I don't need to work, but I would like to in some kind of part time position doing something to make the world a better place and expand my boundaries in this part of my life.
