Selma Wakeman Email & Phone Number | I qualified in 2016 with a 2:1 BA Hons in Community and Youth Work at Ruskin College, Oxford as a mature student, I have been involved in Youth and Community work since 1997 I also 20 years experience as a community artist, including workshop, murals and accreditation. I am the founding Director of Banbury Youth and Community Enterprise CIC, I employ four members of staff and I am responsible for the recruitment, supervision, and training. I am responsible for project planning and development, safeguarding, health, safety, and budget. Banbury Youth and Community Enterprise CIC is a grass roots project set up to address the needs of local teenagers and the community, we run a variety of projects with young people and women who are at risk or need support. This led to us developing a detached project, after a need for contextual safeguarding was identified for young people at risk from child criminal exploitation outside of home or school. From this we developed a senior youth club, cooking and sports sessions, 1:1 mentoring based on the needs of the young people and an informal women’s group for women whose children are at risk from exploitation and other known risks. My main specialism is working with marginalised young people, particularly young people at risk of exploitation and offending. We work with young people to help them understand the social and oppressive constructs they live in and absorb, such as family and community habits, institutions, values, and beliefs and how they react to these oppressive factors, and how their reactions reinforce their own oppression. We also adopt the pedagogical approach of empowering communities and young people.
