Being a patient in the hospital is a very difficult situation to begin with, let alone the idea of being there at night when most people are home sleeping. That’s why it is very reassuring for patients to have a doctor in-house at night, fully awake and ready to cater to the their every need, ensure the continuity of care and at the same time handle any unforeseen emergencies. As a young doctor, I had the opportunity to grow through a multitude of healthcare systems, patient populations and cultures I’ve been exposed to. I did medical school in Lebanon, moved to San Francisco to work as a research specialist at UCSF, then did internship in New York, after which I decided to come back to San Francisco and completed my residency in internal medicine at Kaiser Permanente. Kaiser Permanente is one of the original employee-based health care systems in the country. Kaiser has managed to evolve and progress in advancing the concept of better care for less cost. In my opinion, Kaiser Permanente is a superb example of what the health care system in America ought to become. The ample amount of ancillary support, the state-of-the-art electronic charting system, and most importantly, having the hospitalist at the center of a large multidisciplinary team, gives an enormous boost to the efficiency of the medical team in providing quality care and ensuring higher patient satisfaction.
