Scott Haazen Email & Phone Number | I recently completed my masters in mechanical engineering, graduating in 2020 with a 2:1. The first two years of university I studied as a Chemical Engineer. Although interesting I enjoying the Mechanical Engineering courses far more, leading me to change discipline. This has been advantageous as I now have a greater knowledge of process engineering than I otherwise would have had if I had initially studied at a mechanical engineer. I changed to Mechanical Engineering in my third year, this required an addition class to be added to my timetable. In fourth year I continue to gain knowledge within mechanical engineering also taking an extra curricular business course in order to deepen my industrial knowledge as I feel it is important not only to be a well educated engineer but also to be aware of business actions, regulations and management theories. For my individual thesis I chose the project: 'Design of Wind Turbine Adaptive Blade' as I felt it would be challenging yet ultimately beneficial to my career. Within this project MATLAB was used to analyse the aerodynamic response of potential design blade designs, SolidWorks and ANSYS were used to determine structural response and validate to confirm the designs structural reliability. Throughout this project I gained knowledge on various renewable energy designs (particularly within wind), aero/fluid dynamics, structural analysis (via FEA), composite materials, 3D Modelling and 2D drawing generation. In my last year I was part of a small group of engineers tasked with “The Design of a Multi-directional Fire and Blast Wall for a New Build FPSO”. I gained experience in group working and communications. As a group we met weekly to discuss workload, progression and prepare for the weekly update presentation for project supervisors. I believe this provided valuable experience as it can be seen as an analog to communicating with stakeholders within industry. This project also required well justified design decisions and plans within the oil and gas industry (heavily regulated industry). Again, I gained experience creating technical drawings and models to comply with regulations. I have worked many position in order to fund my education, most recently I was employed at Tesco Extra in Aberdeen as a customer assistant where I pursue overtime in order to brand out my skills. Between university and work I am a proud member of the sub-aqua committee, as assistant engineer I maintained and tested equipment, completing audits, serviced the compressor and stayed in contact with equipment suppliers.
