Knight Foundation, United Way Bay Area, Bay City News Foundation, American Academy of Opthalmology, First District Appellate Project, Craftsmanship Quarterly, California Academy of Sciences, Oakland Museum of California, private editing and coaching clients. As head of journalism at Mills College, I was creative about finding ways to include digital technologies in a small-scale program. I am intellectually curious and I love taking risks and trying new things, and I encouraged my students to develop the same attitudes. Prior to becoming a professor at Mills, I was a senior editor at Mother Jones magazine, where I developed, assigned and edited cover stories and complex feature packages. I also worked as the top editor at Pacific Discovery, the magazine of the California Academy of Sciences, and worked as a reporter at Newsday, the Hartford Courant, and the Oakland Tribune. I have extensive service on non-profit boards, focusing on first amendment issues; journalism and documentary expression; and women's and girls' empowerment and education. In my capacity as a board member I have organized national conferences, including the 2012 Journalism & Women Symposium conference at which Gloria Steinem was our keynote speaker. My life-long commitment to diversity in journalism and education began with the transformative experience I had working under Robert C. Maynard at the Summer Program for Minority Journalists at U.C. Berkeley - and again in his groundbreaking newsroom of the Oakland Tribune in the 1980s. He was a visionary and he changed the way I see the world.
