Samar Shalhoub Email & Phone Number | Born in the middle east, an area where many individuals struggle on a daily basis to protect themselves, Samar prides herself as a strong defender to those whose voice is unheard. Throughout 15 years of extinctive work in the Middle East and North Africa region, Samar has become a leader in areas of Child Protection, Sexual and Gender Based Violence and LGBTI rights. Her persistence in achieving the impossible for the less fortunate is what makes her stand out. Samar joined UNHCR in 2015. UNHCR served as a platform on which she actively established and engaged with community groups. She particularly worked with youth groups, persons with disabilities and minorities from diverse Sexual Orientations and Gender Identities. Samar is very skilled in community mobilization. Managing diverse groups is second hand nature to Samar. Her passionate character, positive energy and emotional intelligence has molded her into a role model to many vulnerable families, refugees as well as colleagues. In parallel to her work in the field, Samar started teaching in Saint Joseph University Beirut in 2014. She is a former internship advisor and a current lecturer in the School of Social Work. Operating in front line conditions requires high energy levels and resilience. To maintain a healthy balance, Samar’s afterhours hobby is Music. She is a Music Composer, Pianist and DJ. She took her hobby to the next level when she combined her passion for music with her career at UNHCR, where she launched ‘RefuDJ’, a professional DJ course for women, youth and LGBTI refugees. The biggest lesson that Samar learned from working in the humanitarian field is not accepting NO for an answer. Every “way-out” should be made possible when helping vulnerable individuals. Samar has significant experience in working with refugees of Sub-Saharan, Central African and Arab background and is particularly interested in working with these groups, in the European region.
