  Russell Newman is a I am an Associate Professor with tenure in Emerson College's Institute for Liberal Arts and Interdisciplinary Studies and the author of The Paradoxes of Network Neutralities (MIT Press, 2019). I am also a Faculty Associate at Harvard University's Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society. I earned my Ph.D. in communication from the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism at the University of Southern California. I teach classes covering the political economy of global communication, democratic theory, media policy, advertising and critical advertising history and surveillance capitalism. My own work explores the intersections of the political economy of media, the epistemological foundations of media policymaking and governance, and activism surrounding communications policy. My book, 'The Paradoxes of Network Neutralities'—now available from MIT Press as part of its Information Policy series—traces the epistemic and material processes that prepared the ground for the FCC’s Open Internet proceedings and the cultural labor these debates performed. The book uses network neutrality to explore ways that neoliberalism renews and reconstitutes itself and the limits of particular forms of activism today. Previous to my return to the academy, I served as Research and Campaign Director for the national nonprofit advocacy group Free Press. There, I focused on media and telecommunications policy, tracking current issues, writing issue briefs and creating Web content. I was deeply involved in working with community organizations across the country to organize around emergent issues. With Robert McChesney and Ben Scott, I am the co-editor of The Future of Media: Resistance and Reform in the 21st Century (Seven Stories Press, 2005), named as one of Working Assets' Recommended Reads for July 2005. I have spoken widely on communications policy. I spent several years as a freelance multimedia designer and as a production designer for a number of independent films. I was active in noncommercial radio in Boston for nearly a decade. I earned my bachelor's degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
