  Rory Clark is a I have spent nearly 4 years working within the SA National Antarctic Program (SANAP). The first 2 years were on Marion Island where I worked as a Cat Hunter working closely with lead scientist Dr Marthan Bester and as Research Assistant to lead scientist Dr Ian Wilkinson on an elephant seal project. The experience gained by living in small teams in adverse conditions, led to my subsequent appointment as Base Commander for the SANAE-34 expedition team. My primary role at SANAE was the oversight and support of the science programs. This ensured that support staff were focused on maintaining and repairing of all equipment needed by the scientists to assist them conduct their research effectively. The physical safety and mental well being of personnel under my leadership was of paramount importance to the success of the expedition. During this time I implemented Health & Safety protocols. Base life was structured with routine check-ins with each member of the team which led to high levels of engagement and successful team cohesion despite the diversity of the team. My work on Marion required that I crisscrossed the Island regularly staying out in the field for up to 10 days at a time. This has ensured that I have a sound understanding of what is required to complete a project in extreme weather conditions across difficult terrain. I completed a BSc Degree majoring in Zoology and Botany. Outside of SANAP, I have a background in logistics and warehousing where I was responsible for overseeing a 24/7/365 operation which moved stock for Woolworths both locally and internationally. Daily planning entailed the scheduling of +20 vehicles moving over 5 000 cartons (total value of R120 million per annum) to and from suppliers and stores on a daily basis. In more than one of my roles I was responsible for the implementation and driving Health and Safety protocols. In addition to this I have extensive experience which involves the setting up of a number of businesses with financial, hr, compliance to various legislative policies. This included costs, budget management and the control and oversight of sound financials in order to avoid the dire consequences of non-compliance such as reputational damage and financial loss. I approach problems from an entrepreneurial as well as commercial approach. I have dealt with clients of varying nationalities and have worked successfully in diversity rich environments. A collaborative approach to stakeholder relationships is also a large part of my experience.
