  Ron Hooghiemstra is a As a boy growing up in the United States, and throughout my studies, it was my ambition to have a richly varied international career. Studying law in the Netherlands provided a good foundation, because it included history, politics, economics, sociology and philosophy. In my first job, I learned about legislative drafting from editing compilations of laws, and about managing people from chairing the staff association. My entry to international work was human rights. Starting at the Council of Europe, this led to comparative criminal law, helping set-up a human rights NGO in London, and then to international peacekeeping: to Haiti under military government, to the birth of post-apartheid South Africa, to post-genocide Rwanda, and back to Haiti for reconstruction and judicial reform. Subsequently, I worked in Kosovo under international administration, through supervised independence to full, if contested, independence. During this time I learned and applied skills in monitoring and reporting, project management, strategic planning and budgeting, human resources management, mediation, advising, training and coaching. But I also learned about the cultures of the societies where I was living: France, England, Haiti, South Africa, Rwanda, Kosovo (and its Ottoman heritage). Seeing the symptoms of post-traumatic stress in Rwanda led me to explore the discrepancy between the psychology of individuals and that of society as a whole. From this, I developed a training programme based on a new definition of human rights as basic human needs, grounded in evolutionary biology and cognitive science. Throughout my career I have maintained an open and inquisitive attitude. I believe in the importance of context, and the capacity of people to think for themselves. I seek to establish strong relationships as the foundation of learning. I worked to share and spread information, to provoke critical thinking, and to form a bridge between cultures and languages.
