This evolved to using 'Buzz Aldrin' as a pejorative, an accusation of second-best, which for us meant mediocrity. People only care about #1. So I went to Berkeley. Chased a dream of Japan. Started two companies. Earned an unprecedented slot for a foreigner in one of Japan’s top universities. Followed in my dad’s academic footsteps. Went to Stanford for a Ph.D. And then I realized, even though I was being Neil Armstrong, my path was making me Buzz Aldrin. It was time to pivot. The things that made me an (Arm)strong academic: intelligence, curiosity, determination, analytic thinking, persuasiveness, narrative sensibility, predilection for learning and research, innate teaching ability. The Aldrin-inducing poor fit: slow pace, insufficient feedback, inflexible and inefficient processes, unmotivating goals, isolation, lack of meaningful contribution. Surely these skills could be leveraged in a better-fitting role and environment to make a real impact! With two decades of teaching and training, two decades of content development, and 15 years of project and event management experience, my passions for teaching, providing people with the tools they need to be successful, organization, and big-picture thinking are what drive me, and the results I can produce and the impact I can make are what serve as my compass for being #1.
