This served as a precursor to the transfer of the total British Columbia First Nations budget ($400 million) to First Nation control this year.Several positions of increasing responsibility over a 26 year career: Mixes of Health management, First Nation and Territorial politics, and significant financial and program accountability. Many memorable people and events. I began in Winnipeg where I planned and evaluated programs making innovative use of Provincial health databases to inform capitol and operating budget priorities. After a year sabbatical in Europe I moved to Branch Headquarters in Ottawa to take charge of computerization. Later I worked in Health Services and Promotion and Corporate Services Branches. I worked briefly in Indian Affairs where I helped boost regional resources for Lands Revenue and Trust activities. Then I returned to Health Canada to be Regional Director of First Nations programs in Halifax with responsibilities for communities in four provinces. I initiated a much needed addiction service in Innu communities. In the late 1990s I moved to Vancouver in a reorganization which failed to interest me. So I moved up to Yukon to mange Health Canada's programs and complete divestiture to the Yukon Government and First Nations. This culminated in an Executive Interchange for me to work for the 29 First Nations on and near Vancouver Island in taking control of their programs. (See Inter Tribal Health Authority). I phased into active retirement at age 5o realizing that time not money was the scarcest resource.
