  Richard Diteesawat is a I received my B.Eng. with second class honours in Mechanical Engineering from Chulalongkorn University, Thailand, in 2015, and was awarded the best final-year project and thesis paper, which was later received the best paper award in the TSME International Conference on Mechanical Engineering, Thailand. After graduation, I worked as a research assistant at the university on the ‘XGlove’ project, creating a cable-driven assistive glove with the purpose to enable disabled or stroke patients to perform and recover grasping motion. At that time, I had met many patients who suffered from disabilities, and this inspired me to work towards smart assistive technology to address these difficulties in lives. For this reason, I joined FARSCOPE CDT program at University of Bristol in 2016, and was fascinated in Soft Robotics, an emerging robotic field with several advantages over conventional robots, comprising soft elements that can safely interact with human body without any harms and efficiently operate under unknown environments. My passion was to invent a smart flexible assistive suit which can facilitate people to achieve mobility and maintain independence with more efficiency and less fatigue. I completed a PhD in 2020 with the thesis title of ‘Development of Soft Artificial Muscles towards a Smart Assistive Suit’, innovating novel, lightweight, flexible, low-cost, high-performance pneumatic artificial muscles, electro-driven actuators, and hybrid electro-pneumatic pump for soft robots, and integrating them to create wearable assistive devices aiding human lower-limb mobilities. The work contributed during my PhD were published in top journals, e.g. Science Robotics and Soft Robotics. Presently, I am working as research associate at University of Bristol in the ‘Right Trousers’ project (FREEHAB), developing both new low-level soft robotic technologies and high-level assistive devices with the ultimate goal of inventing the desired smart assistive suit. I am currently inventing on new soft pneumatic-driven and electrical-driven artificial muscles. Besides, I am interested in investigating other advanced features, e.g. self-fitting, sense of stability and dangers, skin communication and display, washable and breathable active materials, and intelligent navigation.
