Richard Bruce Email & Phone Number | I am interested in all aspects of biology, especially molecular and cellular biology; ecotoxicology; neurobiology; and disease with a biochemical element. My interest in disease pathology and therapeutics has been greatly increased by my mother’s recent diagnosis with sarcoidosis, an area of research I would like to pursue in the future. I am keen to learn and improve my skills as a scientist, particularly adding to my sufficient laboratory training acquired as part of my university degree. I have gained invaluable experience during a year-long ecotoxicology placement at the University of California, Riverside campus where I investigated endocrine disruption properties in a pyrethroid pesticide with Professor Daniel Schlenk. I have presented a poster, as first author, at SETAC international ecotoxicological conference and I am currently preparing the research manuscript. During my MPhil and PhD in biomedicine at Cardiff University I have been investigating calcium-sensing receptor antagonists as a novel therapeutic target for preventing pulmonary remodelling, the underlying cause of irreversible breathing difficulties in a range of inflammatory and interstitial lung diseases using novel image analysis techniques. My research has developed my skills as a scientist, provided opportunities to present research at national conferences and educate undergraduate students assisting with lab-based teaching, exam invigilating and coursework marking. My awards and achievements include research presentations (European Respiratory Society, Madrid 2019; Welsh Thoracic Society, 2019; SETAC International Ecotoxicology Conference, Atlanta USA 2016), The Society of General Microbiology Prize for the Best Pre-final Year Performance (2015), Dean’s List – Recognition of excellent performance (University of Plymouth, 2014), Certificate of Endeavour – A Level Biology (Ivybridge Community College, 2012), and Happiest Pupil Award (Ivybridge Community College, 2012) I have represented Plymouth and Cardiff University 1st teams, reaching the final 40 of the BUCS surfing championships in Newquay on two occasions (2014 & 2016). I have also competed in tennis as a part of the School Team (2007) and the South Devon Tennis Centre Shrewsbury Tour Team (2006) as well as football (Manstow Rangers, 2002-07) and Cricket (Cornwood Cricket Club, 2004-07).
