Prior to Apple, I led a team of 7 engineers modernizing the Yahoo Mail web platform. My goals for the team were fast iteration speed, writing new code in TypeScript with modern dependencies, and leveraging the strengths of our existing codebase by keeping parts which do not need an update. My team and I have upgraded React and Redux to the latest versions and removed legacy context — all while keeping legacy UI working so we can adopt existing components into the new work. This new product now uses latest React 18 APIs for streaming server response with 1 second faster FCP. I created a multi-process dev server which allows for React Fast Refresh and SSR hydration and a Webpack plugin to more efficiently package our CSS for a 92% size reduction with a similar design to Meta’s StyleX. My team has also increased ship confidence with new automated tests focused on UI outcomes instead of implementation details which run faster and more reliably. This leads to pull request builds under 20 minutes and fast iteration speed.
