The floor was where the world’s oil companies, refiners, and speculators came to put-on and take-off commodity risk. It was a singular place with an environment more akin in tone, texture, and even danger to The Sopranos than what one might assume of a Wall Street exchange. The floor ultimately got disrupted by technology, but it was a stern sophisticator of yours truly and remains a central part of my experience. Fast forward to 2010: I’ve now been working in wholesale electric markets for some time. My teammates continue to be traders and other clever operators. We’re managing P&L risk, hedging power plant assets, and trying not to notice renewables growing from nothing to something quite relevant. My role was to sign contracts with utility customers to sell them our plant output. Innovation started springing up on the heels of renewables policy and it centered around DER, EV, and new landscapes known as “grid edge”. I was introduced to Nuvve Corp. and – like any power market professional – immediately appreciated the potential of their storage-centric and category-defying approach called V2G. The best way to understand the scale of what’s before us is to simply let your imagination run. The key is to think big. The implications of simultaneously disrupting and re-doing transportation and energy are nothing short of astonishing. Transactive, TaaS, DER, BEV, ISO, inter-operability, 2222, V2X: the choice is yours, pick your favorite word or acronym. In my opinion, the dimensions we’re talking about and the second order impacts of harnessing transparency and kWh granularity could match or surpass amazing innovations like the smart phone. The reason is that these building blocks are among the direct foundations of the systems themselves and leverage into the economy in a way that has a bigger impact and value proposition.
