When I reflect on this addition to my journey, I realise it brings value into my practice as a therapist in many ways. The most noteworthy parallel between parenting and therapy, is that we can have all the parenting/psychology books in our libraries to guide the process, but at the end of the day, it is human connection, compassion, mindfulness, empathy and acknowledgment, all without judgement that make for a successful parenting/therapeutic journey. Prior to becoming a mother, I've worked extensively as a counselor with both adults and young adults, for the past 7 years in Bangalore. Using a client and context centered approach in my work, I find the inclusion of mindfulness based practices helpful within the overarching talk therapy framework. The mind-body connection is something I believe in, and inherently bring that into my work with clients to deepen the therapy process. The human psyche fascinates me - what drives our belief systems, the choices we make, how much do nature and nurture play into who we become? What needs to be acknowledged and healed in order for us to foster a loving connection with ourselves and with one another? Trying to answer these loaded existential questions with my clients, knowing that I am able to undertake this deeply personal and challenging journey with them, and being a part of their healing is what drives me to do the work that I do.
