  Preethi Gunaratne is a Dr. Preethi Gunaratne is a Moore’s Professor in the Department of Biology & Biochemistry at the University of Houston holding adjunct appointments in the Department of Molecular & Cellular Biology, Human Genome Sequencing Center and Dan L. Duncan Cancer Center at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM). Dr. Gunaratne obtained her B.Sc. (Hon) in Zoology, from the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka and Ph.D. in Genetics, from Cornell University, New York. Following postdoctoral fellowships at the Lurie Cancer Center, Northwestern University and Department of Human & Molecular Genetics at BCM, Dr. Gunaratne received Board Certification in Clinical Molecular Genetics and Medical Genetics (ABMG) in 1999. Following a stint as Assistant Director, Baylor-DNA Diagnostic laboratory, Dr. Gunaratne, joined the International Human Genome Project (HGP) Team. As Director, Gene (cDNA) Sequencing Team, at the Baylor-Human Genome Sequencing Center (Baylor-HGSC), Dr. Gunaratne contributed to the sequencing and annotation of Human Chromosomes 3, 12 and X and led her team to make the largest single contribution to the Mammalian Gene Collection (MGC) in Phase I. 2008-2019, Dr. Gunaratne served as the Leader of the microRNA and Long Non-Coding RNA Groups in the NCI-The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), NHGRI-Zebrafinch and Primate Genome Sequencing Consortia. In 2005, Dr. Gunaratne joined UH and established the first functional genomics platform for decoding the noncoding genome to elucidate the role of microRNAs in cancer, schizophrenia, asthma/COPD/emphysema, song response in the auditory forebrain of songbird, placenta and brain of marmoset and avian flu virus. To rapidly translate the findings into clinical practice Dr. Gunaratne founded NEXTmiRNA Technologies (http://www.nextmirna.com/), a company dedicated to developing tumor suppressor microRNAs for cancer. Dr. Gunaratne is a co-author on 100 original articles, an inventor/co-inventor on 7 US patent applications, a review editor for the journal ‘Frontiers in Non-Coding RNAs’ and reviewer for 20 journals and 10 grant review panels including NIH, National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Australia and Cancer Research UK. Dr. Gunaratne also serves as an Expert Reviewer for the FDA, Florida & Pennsylvania Departments of Health, USA, The FWO (Flanders Research Foundation), Belgium and The Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Stockholm RAE2020
