  Philip Ely is a Philip is a British-Australian design researcher with experience as a professional designer and leader before becoming an academic in 2003. His academic expertise is built on a theoretical and practical foundation – serving his formative years as a graphic designer at dutch typography masters, Total Design, and later being at the forefront of interactive/new media design in the music, design, digital media and television industries - becoming a leading figure in the creation of new products and services between the mid-1990’s and early 2000’s in the UK. Since 2003, Philip has led the development of innovative curriculum, research and knowledge transfer in areas such as graphic design, design management, arts management, fashion management and marketing, crafts, fine art and digital media. Philip has demonstrable academic and research leadership in design, creativity and business start-up in a number of roles and in 2011 he was shortlisted as International Enterprise Educator of the Year for his work in supporting the professional development of student and post-education creative enterprises. In January 2015, Enterprise Nation voted him as one of Britain’s Top 50 Business Advisers. Philip’s design research interests include design for business, social design and broader design-led innovation. He has co-founded a number of ventures, led collaborative research and is an advocate for social change. He is currently leading the Making and Materiality, Community, Culture & Heritage Group at Manchester School of Art where he is leading new research focussed on designing for grand challenges and countercultural heritage. He was the lead researcher on The Climate Domesday Book which was exhibited in John Curtin Gallery, Perth, WA and which continues to inspire positive action in response to the climate emergency.
