After graduating from York University with a Fine Arts degree in Film in 1975, Earnshaw began his career as a news cameraman and went on to work as Director of Photography and Director, mostly in Canadian television. He was the DP and director on the hit series Traders and on The Associates. Most notably though he has been associated with the cult favorite Degrassi, having either photographed or directed over 200 episodes both of the original series and it's successor, Degrassi, The Next Generation, now just known as Degrassi. He has also directed many other TV series; Cracked, Being Erica, The Border and others. He is still open to new experiences and new shows and works hard to stay at the top of his craft. He has won and has been nominated for many awards for his work as a director and as well as a cinematographer. Most notably he won a Canadian Screen Award, a Gemini Award and a Peabody Award for directing and a Director's Guild of Canada Team award for episodes of Degrassi the Next Generation. He has also won a Canadian Society of Cinematographers award for excellence in cinematography. The son of a Navy officer, Phil grew up in Canada, the U.S. and England, and spent many formative summers on a family farm on the north shore of Lake Erie. He has been married for over 30 years and makes his home in Toronto.
